Title I What is Title I? Title I is a federally funded program designed to give children extra help in the areas of reading and math. Other schools serve lower as well as upper grades, but here at Unity, we target those in K-3 to give extra attention. Every K, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grader takes two reading and 2 math exams. There is no "passing" or "failing" to these tests. They are only used to see if the student needs extra reading or math assistance. After the test have been scored, the Title I teachers meet with each K-3 teacher to review the results. We then decide on a cut off score. The students whose total score falls below the cut off will be eligible to receive Title I services. In K and 1st grade, Title I teachers work within the regular classroom to give extra individualized instruction to those students that qualify. The teachers will work together to design a program that best meets the needs of all students involved. Second and third grade students that are in Title I will come to the Title I classroom to receive further help with skills that are covered in the regular classroom. At the end of each week, the 2nd and 3rd grade teachers will complete a coordination sheet. This form lists skills that the students will be working on for the next week in the regular classroom. Activities are set up in the Title I room to go along with these skills. If a student is having difficulty with something, we will "zone" in on the problem. Our class is intended only to help the students with their academic work and to provide a learning environment where the student is comfortable.
