Mental Health:  Suicide Prevention

Most people experience times when they worry and struggle with their feelings.  But for those who live with a mental illness, managing the world around them can be much more challenging.  And they may be at a higher risk of harming themselves.  Studies show that about 90 percent of people who die by suicide had a mental health issue.

That's why getting help is key to healing.  With proper treatment, people who suffer from mental illness can live healthy, productive lives.

Signs to watch for

Here are some common signs that someone may be at risk of harming themselves:

  • Expressing feelings of hopelessness

  • Isolating themselves

  • Acting anxious or reckless

  • Experiencing changes in sleeping patterns

  • Inability to concentrate

  • Increased use of drugs or alcohol

  • Intense mood swings and rage

If you feel that someone is in immediate danger of hurting themselves or others, call 911 or your local emergency services immediately.
